23rd Monument Authority on Crete in Heraklion, Greece

The 23rd Ephorie for Prehistorical and Classical Antiquity is a regional office of the Culture Ministry, located in Heraklion, Crete. It is responsible for excavations, protection, maintenance and care of the ancient monuments in Middle-Crete, and for scientific research. Another task is to make the cultural heritage of excavations and museums available and present them to the public. Among the great ancient sites are the world-famous Minoan “palaces” of Knossos, Phaistos, and Hagia Triada, and the former Roman provincial capital city of Gortyn. The early-archaic period, called the “Daedalus phase” after the mythical architect Daedalus, is one of the important cultural phases in Crete. The finds in the excavations in Prinias, Gortyn and the Ida-caves belong to this period.

The archeological sites in Middle-Crete are among the most frequently visited archeological sites in Greece.
